--- Quote Start --- Why do I get the following error: "Failure to obtain a simulation license# Error loading design when opening a design to simulate in ModelSim Altera Edition?" --- Quote End --- Because "Altera Edition" requires a license. The free version is called "Altera Starter Edition". Cheers, Dave - Altera_Forum

--- Quote Start --- Yes I know that, I got ModelSim Altera university program with full license. --- Quote End --- Do you have the LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variable set? Use lmtools (part of the Mentor Graphics tools) to see what the issue is. Cheers, Dave - Altera_Forum

--- Quote Start --- Yes I have the LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variable set, ModelSim was working just yesterday I got this ERROR. Could you please tell me how can I get to lmtools? --- Quote End --- I use Modelsim SE, and the licensing tools are a separate install (downloaded from Mentor). I'm not sure where the Altera Edition keeps this tool, if it even has it. Look in the Modelsim folder. Otherwise you can download the licensing tools from Mentor. What is your LM_LICENSE_FILE set to? Does it have other tools in there? Try reducing it to just your Modelsim license if you have the variable set to multiple files. I know that MATLAB likes to be first in the list ... --- Quote Start --- LM_LICENSE_FILE set to ModelSim only. --- Quote End --- You mean something like c:/altera/modelsim/license.dat right? --- Quote Start --- I will try to download the licensing tools from Altera. --- Quote End --- Search for 'lmtools'. You probably should look on Model Technologies, or Mentor Graphics web site though, not Altera. I looked for a download link, but wasn't able to find one. The lmtools program is part of the FlexLM license manager that was provided by macrovision, but it seems that company no longer exists ... File an Altera Service Request, since its Modelsim Altera Edition, and see what they recommend. Cheers, Dave - Altera_Forum

I just looked in the Modelsim bin directory, eg.,
C:\software\altera\11.0sp1\modelsim_ase\win32aloem there's a copy of lmtools in there. Run it, and then click on the 'Server Diags' tab, and then click the 'Perform Diagnostics' button and you'll see something like this ...

--- Quote Start --- lmtools doesn't work, it seems no longer exists! --- Quote End --- Which version of the tools are you using? If lmtools doesn't exist in whatever version of Modelsim you have installed, install the v11.0sp1 tools to get it. Cheers, Dave
