Failure to obtain a simulation license

Why do I get the following error: "Failure to obtain a simulation license# Error loading design when opening a design to simulate in ModelSim Altera Edition?"

Do you have the LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variable set?

Use lmtools (part of the Mentor Graphics tools) to see what the issue is.
