    Hi,
MAX 10 has many security features starting with simple copy protection for CFM content, 128 Bit AES encrypted configuration, secure JTAG mode. Review MAX® 10 FPGA Configuration User Guide

As stated, use Quartus Prime Std. edition.

    Regards
    Frank

What is the correct approach to get the FPGA content secured? This means making sure it cannot be read out via JTAG. Therefore, how can the read-back process be prevented?

MAX 10 devices aren't supported in Pro at all, so no.
