Quartus Prime Lite 24.1 Build 1077 no patches hangs frequently

Hi,

I just installed Quartus Prime version 24.1std build 1077 and I am able to get through a project creation, compile and download but frequently during steps (eg programmer or text editor) Quartus hangs. It takes me 2 or 3 restarts to get through start to finish. Would you know what the problem is?

Thanks

Larry Landis (ex-employee) I am prepping for an FPGA grad class I'm teaching :^)

  • Hmm, I’m still unable to reproduce the issue on my side.

I’ve created a few revisions, but no luck so far.

I’ve attached the modified light.qar file—could you check if you encounter the hanging issue when switching from one revision to another?

    Regards,

  • Hi Larry,

I don't observe any Quartus software hang issues while using Quartus 24.1 Standard Edition.

Here are troubleshooting steps that you may want to check:

    1. Before you download and install the software, please check that your machine system met the minimum Hardware and Software Requirements. Ensure that your Operating System is supported.

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/docs/programmable/683472/current/system-requirements-and-prerequisite.html

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/programmable/support-resources/design-software/os-support.html#tab-blade-1-2

2.Check that the disk space is sufficient for the installation of the Intel FPGA software.

    3. If you are running antivirus software, try to temporarily disable the antivirus software during the Quartus Prime software download and installation process.

    4. Try to disable all the software running behind in the background.

    5. Install the software with Administrator privileges.

    6. If install using .tar, try to re-download the Quartus .tar installation package and install again. Check that the installation files .tar is not corrupted by checking the checksum.

    7. Try to download and auto install using the new Quartus installer.

    8. Check your OS history update, e.g. to check if the issue happen after some specific Window update.

    Hi Richard

Thanks for the thorough and quick response to my inquiry.

I'm running Windows 11 on a 3 year old PC so i don't think it's the SW/HW setup. I reinstalled 24.1 as admin and retried and see the same issues.

I think its something related to revisions. I am working on this course that uses revisions:

    https://learning.intel.com/Developer/learn/courses/807/university-self-guided-lab-introduction-to-fpgas-and-the-intelr-quartusr-prime-software/lessons/1582:174/introduction-to-fpga-design-in-quartus

I wrote this course several years ago and used to give it frequently in my apps mgr role. It seems like without revisions everything behaves properly, and I can switch between different Quartus apps without issue. Are their any known issues using revisions that you know about? If you go to the lab manual above you can retrace what I'm doing - it should only take a couple of minutes to create the original design and then make a revision off of it.

    Thanks for your help!

  • I’ve tried creating a few revisions but haven’t observed any hanging issues—both with the text editor and when opening the Programmer GUI (though I haven’t performed actual programming).

Could you share your project file (.qar) so I can attempt to duplicate the issue on my end?

Also, could you provide the exact steps to reproduce the issue? For example, does Quartus hang for a few minutes or indefinitely when opening a new Text File or Verilog File?

I don’t have a physical board with me—does the hang occur during the programming process, or when the Programmer GUI window is launched?

      Hi Richard,

Here is a simple qar file. When I switch from one revision to another, it hangs for me. It seems like if I stay within one revision and launch various tools (timing analyzer, chip planner) things are ok. I'm curious if you see the same behavior.

      Cheers,

      Larry

    Hi Richard

This light_modified.qar seems to work, no more hanging. I will open a new ticket if i can reproduce the steps that caused my project to hang. Thanks for your help!

    Cheers,

    Larry
