Licesnse for Questa?

I downloaded the free, lite version of Quartus Prime and opted for installing Questa, during the installation setup.

But now when I try to run it, it doesn't work.

Is a separate license for Questa required?

I did that, but nothing changed.

When trying to launch Questa manually I just get this pop up and it goes away, with nothing happening afterwards.

And when I set up Quartus to run the simulation automatically after compilation, I get the following messages:

Latest version simulator needs environment variable SALT_LICENSE_SERVER for fixed license

You need a free license for it: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/docs/programmable/683472/25-3/and-software-license.html

Based on the messages, it seems like you might not have set up the environment variable correctly.
Which Quartus/Questa version you are using?
Starting from version 25.1, Questa Altera FPGA Edition no longer reads the LM_LICENSE_FILE and MGLS_LICENSE_FILE environment variables. Instead, you should use SALT_LICENSE_SERVER. Note that the SALT_LICENSE_FILE mentioned in the user guide is a typo and will not work.

Please refer to the section titled "Setting Up the Questa*-Intel® FPGA Starter Edition Software License"  in the user guide link provided by sstrell.

If the issue persists, it might be due to license file issue. Ensure that:
        - The Questa license is not expired.
        - You are using the Starter license for the Questa Starter Edition, and a Non-Starter license for the Questa Non-Starter Edition.
        - The license type is Fixed and not a Floating license.
