What is the purpose of the ipx file generated by Qsys?

The ipx file is generated by Qsys sometimes, what is its purpose? It looks like an XML file of some sort but I cannot say anymore.

    A .ipx file in an IP index file. It allows tools like Quartus and Platform Designer see the paths to multiple IP in a single file. It is indeed XML. The Platform Designer User Guide does have a section, I believe, on how to create one for your own IP.
