The ipx file is generated by Qsys sometimes, what is its purpose? It looks like an XML file of some sort but I cannot say anymore.

Super ContributorA .ipx file in an IP index file. It allows tools like Quartus and Platform Designer see the paths to multiple IP in a single file. It is indeed XML. The Platform Designer User Guide does have a section, I believe, on how to create one for your own IP.
