System Console crash - Quartus II 14.1 and Win 8.1

Hi everybody,

Yesterday I installed Quartus II 14.1 on my new Windows 8.1 computer. On my previous computer I have used Quartus 12 with no issues (W7 32bits).

The new computer has the latest Microsoft updates installed.

I opened one of my projects to see how the new version of Quartus behaves. Everything seemed to be fine except for the System Console which always crashes on launch.

When launching the System Console from Quartus II, it briefly appears on the screen (less than a second) and then it's gone.

When launched from Qsys, it briefly appears but then additionally, I get the following error message:

## A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:# # EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x00007ffca1d01a86, pid=5616, tid=5308# # JRE version: Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (8.0_05-b13) (build 1.8.0_05-b13)# Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (25.5-b02 mixed mode windows-amd64 compressed oops)# Problematic frame:# C # # Failed to write core dump. Minidumps are not enabled by default on client versions of Windows# # An error report file with more information is saved as:# D:\work\FPGA\Altera\jtag_pio_DE0\hs_err_pid5616.log# # If you would like to submit a bug report, please visit:# http://bugreport.sun.com/bugreport/crash.jsp# The crash happened outside the Java Virtual Machine in native code.# See problematic frame for where to report the bug.#

Any idea is appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

Me too! Any help appreciated. Tried looking at the log it references but no enlightening information to me. Tried updating both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Java with no luck. Tried launching console through Qsys and through command shell. Always immediately crashes.

This forum is run by members, not Altera, so I'd recommend submitting this particular bug report directly to Altera via a Service Request.

Note that you can also start an NIOS II IDE shell (which is a Cygwin shell) and start system-console from there. That method might provide additional messages about why its failing.

I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 ... I lasted about an hour before I wiped the hard-drive and installed Windows 7 and Centos 7 :)

    Cheers,

    Dave

Do you have installed another version of Quartus side by side? Maybe some environment variables are overwritten?

    Greetings,

So I have the same issue. I searched the altera forums and found this thread. Replied to the thread and was advised to submit an SR. The SR submission process requires you to do a forum search and view at least one linked topic before it lets you submit an SR. Guess what is the only topic it found? Yep, this one. Ironic.

So I have filed a formal SR, number 11118975. I linked to this thread in the SR, hopefully whoever works the SR participates in this thread.

In response to flz47655, I got similar info through a different method. I tried launching a NIOS II console and then navigating to the system console binary and launching it from there. I got an immediate crash with a java crash log. Tried to attach java crash log but it was too long for forum.

    Here is the console output:

    dsmoot@DSMOOT-LAPTOP /cygdrive/c/altera/14.1/quartus/sopc_builder/bin
    $ ./system-console

The response from Altera arrived this morning:

    Hi David,

Thank you for your patience. Upon checking internally, this is a known bug with our debugging tools when running on Windows 8.1 platform. This issue is planned to be fixed in Quartus II v15.0 which is scheduled for release in May 2015. Please note that the release date may change. Temporarily, you need to use windows 7 in order to launch our debugging tools.

Please let me know if you need further assistance on this.

    Best Regards,

    Oh well.

Win 8 compatibility != Win 8.1 compatibility and have to wait until May... good!
