QuartusII 10.0 installation problem

I am using AVG also and have the same problem everyone is describing, but nplttr's installation solution seems to have worked:

I tried the command line installation and did:

>cmd

>cd C:\...\Temp\10.0_quartus_free_windows\altera_installer\bin

>altera_installer_cmd.exe --target=c:\altera\10.0 -s C:\...\Temp\10.0_quartus_free_windows --install=quartus_free -w

in the c:\altera\10.0 directory the quartus directory and the following files appear: altera_installer.log bin.zip common.zip designs.zip ip.zip others.zip

This installed the software but no devices are installed.

I had numerous problems to get this to work, however. After multiple reboots and cleaning of failed installation files and directories (including the toggling of AVG), it finally worked, and I'm not sure what caused it to finally run correctly (the command would be executed, but the terminal window would open up and immediately close without doing anything). Eventually it stayed open for a good 20 minutes and when I checked the directory it was now over 3 Gigs as opposed to the previous 50 MB from the altera_installer. Quartus started up fine afterwards.

I am now trying to get the device packages installed, and I'm having trouble. I tried running the altera_installer gui like nplttr suggests, but it now isn't connecting to the internet, and the Next button on the wizard is grayed out when I try to select the directory of the unpacked files. I tried running the command line instructions Stewart Little suggested but quartus_sh isn't a recognized command (I believe I might have gotten lost somewhere, I'm sure there's a command line way to do this).

Any other suggestions or advice? Thanks in advance

I had the same problem. I did the following and then the GUI installer worked:

Made sure I had more then enough disk space >25Gbytes

Disabled AVG 9 completely:

using msconfig to disable all AVG services, restarting the PC and after restart ending all processes (using ctrl+alt+del) that are AVG related (have avg in their name)

I then ran the downloaded 10.0_quartus_free_windows.exe to unpack all the files to a specific map. The unpacked files contain a setup.exe. I ran it normally and the installation worked.

I turned off AVG and even went offline, sadly it's the same results. The wizard still stops and leaves a very small directory with no executable. I tried it a number of different times, and I noticed that the final size of the directory was always different, between 14 MB to 88 MB, still no where near the 3+ Gigs it should be at. What would cause the installation to falter at different points like that?

I still have the command line installation, but I cannot make use of it without the device packages installed. Would someone be willing to walk through a command line unpacking of the .qda's found in C:.../temp/10.0_quartus_free_windows/devices/subscription? The two methods mentioned here by nplttr and Steward Little haven't worked on my end (Maybe I missed a step?)

I followed henks advice and managed to install Quartus, nios2 and ModelSim...

There must be something that the AVG is blocking while doing the install...

I tinkered on this a bit more and found out that AVG Resident Shield is still enabled even if I have disabled AVG services on Startup and Services, rebooting and having no system tray icon (on Windows 7 at least). I started AVG Free User Interface, Tools->Advanced Settings->AVG Resident Shield, unchecked Enable Resident Shield, Applied the settings, and ran setup.exe. Everything installed correctly and seems to be working... thanks!

I've had the same issue with my Win7 (64-bit) system and found the solution based on your comments.

I have free AVG installed and to correctly and completely install V10, you must disable the AVG Resident Shield option under the Tools > Advanced Settings >Resident Shield menu. Uncheck the "Enable Resident Shield" setting. Now the install works fine. Install all your modules (QuartusII, NiosII, ModelSim). Go ahead and do the USB-Blaster driver install as well by plugging in the USB blaster and when asked, point the search to the USB Drivers under the Altera directory. It will install fine and does not have the issue of the unsigned driver problem that pre-V10 QuartusII installs did on Win7 machines. After you're done, turn the "Resident Shield" back on and you should be golden. :)

I tried to install Quartus II V10.0 web edition on several computers with Windows XP SP3 without any success.

1/ On Czech Windows, no drive space errors appeared (0 bytes on a drive with free 25 GB). This error was already described in Altera forum.

2/ On genuine English Windows, the installer ran for some time, but no functional software was installed.

3/ I wrote batch file for 'altera_installer_cmd.exe' according to the recommendations presented in this discussion group. Success, but only for a first glance, after starting Quartus II, I found out that no devices were available.

4/ I tried to correct installation error by adding Cyclone II with the aid of "Modify Altera Complete Design Suite 10.0" shortcut in Altera program group. The installer informed me that Cyclone II that I needed was present as a default option (grey inactive option), so it was impossible to remove Cyclone II and add it again for forcing its reinstallation.

5/ I tried to add missing Cyclone II from cycloneii.qda by Quartus shell command, but I found out that the shell was not also installed completely, so the command was unavailable.

6/ I returned to Quartus V9.1

** So my question**: When do you expect the release of new Windows installer for Quartus II 10.0 web edition V10? :)
