Quartus for the first time doesn't run at all on Ubuntu v8.04. Previous releases of Ubuntu worked w/ Quartus... Now it just hangs. Any ideas other than switching from Ubuntu? I can use v7.10 until a later date... but v8.04 is the long term support (LTS) version - Altera should consider supporting it. Jon

Thanks... I installed all of your font packages - still just hangs on start up. I've tried 3d effects on, off, etc. Seems to be an 'X' problem? Any other ideas?

Quartus II uses MainWin (...thus, the /tmp/Mw.... stuff). You could try running mwcleanup and/or just deleting/removing all of the "/tmp/Mw*" directories. Also, knowing how MainWin works, you might also want to check that you have the following font packages installed:

That's not because there's any particular requirement for exactly these font packages, but it is working for me and these are what I have installed. MW could be hanging when building up the font cache.

You could try copying a "libX11.so.6.2.0" from a supported distribution into your Quartus distribution and then making the appropriate links, like so:

Also, note any strange messages (dmesg or in /var/log/messages) to see if that gives you any clues.

There is no magic recipe that will always work and Altera is better than most vendors with respect to Linux support. In my mind, most of the issues that do exist are due to the choice of Mainwin for the GUI, but I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.

Hi Jon;

It looks like your strace terminated when the process forked. Try running again with the command

strace -f quartus

This should follow the new process when it forks off.

I'm still debugging this problem... but bottom line is I'm getting no-where. The strace outputs of a system that works (v7.10) and this one (v8.04) are full of errors that apparently don't matter - as they show up in both but one of them works. They both terminate the trace with "gettimeofday" entries like those in the given trace.

If I had to guess, it's an "X" problem. But I'm stuck. Deal is - the graphical desktop hangs, I ctrl-alt-f1 to another terminal and can't even kill the quartus job. We're now headed down the road to use a virtual machine running CentOS to run this tool.

Any new suggestions? I have two 8.04 boxes... one reports a "Cannot open X display "(not specified)". when I try to run quartus, the other just hangs....

I should clarify... after all my trouble with 8.04 I performed a clean re-install - and I still have the same symptoms where the machine just hangs.

The other machine is my personal laptop - and it has the "X display" problem.

So far Quartus is the only EDA tool I'm using that doesn't work in Ubuntu 8.04 - Modelsim works fine.
