QII Web Edition maintenace subscription?

I opened Quartus II V11.0 Web Edition this morning and was greeted by a "License Notification" window: "Your maintenance subscription for the Quartus II software expires in 60 days (October 24, 2011). In order to be eligible for renewal pricing you must renew your maintenance subscription before it expires. Renewing your maintenance subscription ensures that you can download updates and new software releases for the next 12 months."

This is the free **Web Edition**, which previously has not required any kind of subscription. Please explain.

    That's a good one..

One of two things.. It's a bug in the web addition.

Or you are getting a licenses to someone else's subscription addition vi a LM_LICENSE_FILE variable on your system..

    I would check the following:

Goto help, about in Quartus II and report what it says.

    Mine says:

Quartus II Version 11.0 Build 208 07/03/2011 SJ Full Version

    Service Pack Installed: 1

Mine is the Full version, so I would expect yours to say Web Edition.

Then goto tools->License Setup and llook at what that says.

There's also a Web License Update button in there. I know you can run the Full Version with a Web-License, and vice versa. It may be your web-license is about to expired, and you just need to grab a new one. Although I thought the last web-license I had didn't have an expiration date.

If your license file line is in the form of <port>@<computername> and the computer name doesn't match your machine, you are probably picking up someone else license in your organization.

This company has no Altera license files that I know about. I have never known about any for Quartus II. We had some for Max+Plus II Web Edition but those expired long ago.

The Tools - License Setup - License file window on my desktop computer is blank. The Current License box says

    License type: Web Edition

    Subscription Expiration: 2011.04

    Host ID type: Not found

    Host ID value: Not found

So is Altera now requiring a license for the Web Edition of Quartus II? I was unaware of it. That is like the bad old days with Max+Plus II.

Yes. I do believe they now require a license file even for the web-edition.

They've changed stuff around: Here's the licensing website.

    http://www.altera.com/download/licensing/lic-index.html

There's a specific Web Edition link about halfway down the page under Set Up A License..

EDIT: I just looked at that page, and it says beginning with Version 8.1 a license file is no longer required.. ? So I guess it's probably a bug, and will continue to work.

You may want to send a support request and see if they know what's going on.
