I can't disclose exact details yet since Nios II 5.0 hasn't been officially released.
The Nios II/f has a new improved data cache which also provides faster accesses to memory, especially on-chip memories. The number of logic elements hasn't changed (maybe a bit more with the new D-cache). The old D-cache is still available to provide complete backwards compatibility although the vast majority of software that works with the old D-cache will work with the new D-cache. - Altera_Forum

Hello,
Altera has released the evaluation Version of Nios II 5.0. As far as I know the only difference between the evaluation version and the full version is that the full version contains the MicroC/OS-II RTOS. Or are there other differences? http://www.altera.com/support/software/dow...-quartus_we.jsp (http://www.altera.com/support/software/download/altera_design/quartus_we/dnl-quartus_we.jsp) Regards, niosIIuser - Altera_Forum

I know some information about the plan of Nios(NiosII). When I see the Nios "5", I totally confused. Where are nios 4? Is it NiosII or Nios? Maybe Altera wants to add Nios as a componet inside of Quartus like SOPC, then the version is the same as the quartus. However, Nios is not only a IP core, but also needs Compiler,Debugger....(IDE). In my opinion, Altera could provides a full latest install package of Quartus including SOPC, Nios(IP+IDE), and seperated latest package of them for multi-purpose. It is more comfortable that all versions are seperated
