My PCB design for Cyclone II ep2c20F484;ep2c35F484
I am begginer ir FPGA and the problem I have is with these development bords is that they are very expensive! cheapest bord I found with cyclone II ep2c20 FPGA is firefly bord with cost 350$ and its too expensive and second problem is that these FBGA chips is olmost inposible solder by hands soldering wires to pins.
Only solution is to make PCB and there is third problem that this PCB trace width is wery small 8mils (0.2mm) and ALTERA recomended trace width for PCB is 5mils (0.12mm) and drill hole 8mils (0.2mm) so not all PCB manufacturers can make these PCB and 4 leyer PCB is almost 2.5 times expensiver than 2 leyer PCB. I locked at your link stonie and there is bords with ep1c12 device (old cyclone I ) but I need bord with cyclone II device and at least ep2c20 becose it hase 4 PLL and 16 clock inputs like oll bigger cyclone series devices and also need bord with acces to all pins for experimenting and that I don't like in all development bords that there isn't acces to all pins.
my bord for EP2C20F256 (with only 152 I/O) will have 200 pins availible and there will be all pins include VCC IO for all I/O banks and all special function pins and onbord will be this configuration memory (16mb) and power supply for core and memory IO bank and one oscillator and JTAG. All ather interfaces I will put on ather bord (for example cheap 2 layer) and then will stick bords together (so my bord will be like module http://forum.niosforum.com/work2/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif Actualy I found Cheapest FPGA development bord for 175$ with lot of features on it!, but it isn't ALTERA it is LAttice and it have powerfule FPGA device which can be compared to ep2c20F484 but disadvantage is this device prise it is more expensiver 72$ than cyclone device 42$ so I will not buy this bord becose I alrady explores Quartus software and don't want to spend time lerning ather sofware. BUT ALTERA and ather bord developers can lern from them HOW tom MAKE extremy CHEAP development bord from begginers !!! Becose bord with price 1000$ scare begginers like me! - Altera_Forum

Now I don't have company So I am making for my self and freand but if we will develop some realy good product like CNC motion controller then i could make company and all ather bords then will be for comarcial pourpouse like part of system.

no jdhar. it is definitly not from a point of view of emc purpose.
for a 484 bga you will need up to 5 layers for fanout purposes.
you will need 1 powerplane for vio 3v3 and 1 for vcore 1v2.
both powerplanes need to be seperated by one gnd plane
each routing layer needs a gnd plane where the e and h field go to.
so if you draw such a layerstack :
1 top
2 gnd
3 vcore-plane
4 gnd
5 vio-plane
6 gnd
7 routinglayer 1
8 routinglayer 2
9 gnd
10 routinglayer 3
11 routinglayer 4
12 gnd
13 bot
this 13 layers so 1 layer left for other purposes.
be aware of that the distance between the core and gnd is 50um and between routinglayer as far away as possible.

--- Quote End --- i do not see a solution of a 484 with 6 layers. 3 layers are needed at least for a power supply that is wide decoupled for signals of several hunderd MHz. to reach the inner balls of the 484 of a cyclone 2 you need 5 layers even with 4/4mil. so 8 layers would be the minimum. the question is if the pcb has to be an industrial design that can stand all approval test like burst surge TEM ..... and furthermore pass the etsi requirements if the design needs to pass. a propper powerplane design is needed if you have a clock speed of 50MHz (sinus!!) you will end up with the 5th that ist 5x50MHz meaning at least 250MHz to get a proper recangle. so your design must handle 250MHz wide low impedance powerplane. this can only be archieved with a full copper plane for gnd and for each supply with a distance of 50um. 100um woulod work but you lose the profits of the field effects that occur between the planes! to have a propper signal on you pcb (again 50MHz clock leadts to at least 250MHz) you need to have an eye on impedance and crosstalk between layers and traces. with a layerstack as mentioned above the board has a optimum signal, nearly no emission, reaches class A of emc tests and does not "recognise" any burst or surge pulse. even the TEM does not have any effect. with less layers it is possible to disturb the same design and a couple of peaks will rise during the tests between 30 and 1000 MHz. i have seen the emc tests of "eval kits" with as less as possible layers and these pcb will never pass the emc requirements !! not only the peaks are far above the limit line. again the question is for what purpose the design should be. if the design is pure digital then it could work, but if there are analog parts within the complete design where you want to find signals within the noise a bad power supply will destroy everything. we had a barcode reader design where just modifying the powersupply lead to 18% more readings leading to a better product. an rfid reader got 30% more reading distance by just modifiying the layout without changing any component or the placement (to use the paste masks again after the design change. I think 6 layers for BGA 256 would be maximum and I will tray to make some space for EMI filters (like chip ferrite beads).

I contacted sevral companys but there is only one company (in my contry) who could solder BGA and test with x-Ray, but they are asking 400-700euros (for Quantities 1-100 and in local forum gays sayed that in mobile phone repair servic they solder these BGA packages for mobile phones so maby they will solder few FPGAs for 20$ http://forum.niosforum.com/work2/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif if not then there is alternative it is (Home) electrical owen were could be solderes SMD parts. There are few links were is described how to do this soldering in home http://forum.niosforum.com/work2/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif and after soldering I will make testing.
Is there some cheap companys that can make PCB and asemble it ?? i found good desciption about FPGA ground design in xilinx page and they have example of how to chose capacitors and they Quantity and I recalculated for my ep2c20f256 and here are results i got : For VCC INT 1.2V (VCC int has 9 pins and VCC IO 20 pins = 29 VCC pins) 680uF Q=1 2.2uF Q=4 0805 0.47uF Q=8 0603 0.047 Q=16 0402 totaly there is 29 caps for each voltage level so I will doble number off all caps for 2 voltage levels and will have 58 caps. Once again I am thinking that it would be mutch esear to buy this cheap FPGA bor for 175$ but in future If I will develop some good application I will have to designe this PCB anyway, and will have to buy expensive Lattice Fpga 72$ is olmost twice as mutch comared to ep2cC20 42$ I will redesigne my PCB http://forum.niosforum.com/work2/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif becose there is too litle place for cap vias and only way is use 6 layers insted of 4. - Altera_Forum

Has anyone used POL power-off-load power supply tehnology????
I found bellnix BSV ultra fast series with switching freqency up to 3Mhz with low voltage ripple 40 mV and it needs only 2 22uF ceramic capacitors and few higher freqency caps and no inductor! Also I found 4Mhz power supply it is Ltc3414 (linear tehnology) ! I read about these high frequency switch power supplys and they are specialy recomended for FPGAs. - Altera_Forum

Hi Epis,
the LT3412A ist feeding my ep2c50 with Vcore 1,2V from 3,3V and works perfect. But you need to take care about the layout or the ltc34xx family will oszilate and won't produce a stabel vcore. we have verified that on 2 different pcb's with different placement and both do not work identical as the placement and layout is different. but it is a good family from linear. the ltc3412a can deliver up to 2,5A and the one you mentioned can deliver up to 4A. The switching frequency depends on the design. the parts, the input and output voltage and currents. the ltc3412a we use can also switch up to 4 MHz but it runs here at abot 1.5MHz. Michael
