Cyclone V GS power estimation

Hello All,

I have a 10 years old project with Cyclone 3 and Quartus 10, and now I will migrate it to Cyclone V Gx with Quartus 21.1 with adding and removing few IPs.

The Design is not finished yet, but I need to get to estimate the power consumption for different Rails.

I ran the EPE sheet with CSV file from Quarts21 also I ran the power analyzer tool with Quartus21

My question is, the reported results show a VCCIO with 2.14mA. VCC 156mA, VCCAUS 69mA as in the figures below.

However, the hardware designer saying this is very low power consumption and something is not right about the results, but I have no idea what should I do to check if my results are correct or wrong.

Do the results below make sense? Or it is too low? How can I double-check the power consumption if my design is not ready?

Can I find any power consumption reference for Cyclone V?

Do you have any advice regarding this topic?

The results as follows:

Design report

power consumption

Rails power

VCCIO IO banks current

VCCPD IO banks current

The EPE sheet results of Quartus CSV file as follows:

      Hello @Fakhrul,

Ja, I used the EPE you mentioned, and I also read the document about EPE and followed exactly the training course from Intel about using EPE.

However, I am not sure if this is correct results or at least close to the estimated results.

@Fakhrul Please, can you check my results in my post and see if they are close to real expected results or are they far from correct, and I can't count on them?

      Best regards,

      Taha

One thing you might consider if you really want to be safe is to buy a cheap development board with the part you're using. Get one with few peripheral chips (this will make it cheaper as well) and just measure the power consumption.

    Hi t_alars,

May I know what is the actual measurment on the board? How much inaccuracy was observed?

    Regards,
