The different toolchain from niosWiki : disambiguous

Hi

I am new on this forum. I got a nios2 board last years and i want to set up Linux on it.

With the help of nioswiki.com i saw that there exist a distribution for mmu and for nommu (even if nommu becomes outdated).

The first thing I want to do is to set up the cross compiler toolchain.

I don't understand why on the wiki there is several different toolchain.

1 In CrossGCC

2 In InstrallNios2Linux (about nommu)

3 in Linux quick start (about mmu) (prebuilt on toolchain-mmu/x86-linux/bin)

4 Build the gcc4 toolchain

Why are there different toolchains to compile linux for the nios2 architecture ?

1. crossgcc is not for linux/uclinux.

2. pointer to binary toolchain for nommu uclinux, and build the toolchain.

3. binary toolchain for mmu linux.

4. build the toolchain for mmu linux.

You will need the hardware project for you board first. Which nios2 board do you have?

I have the NiosII Embedded Evaluation Kit board. Yes but I found several sopc project across the wiki for the neek.  Why are the mmu and nommu toolchain different ?

nommu uclinux uses a special object format called "binary flat", and doesn't support dynamic libraries. so the toolchains are different.

I would suggest starting with mmu, as nommu branch will be merged into mmu. You

may follow the try out of mmu linux first.

Did somebody try to convert the NEEK demo in

http://nioswiki.com/try_out_without_compilation

with the Altera script to make it bootable by the Altera Application Loader so that "killing" the NEEK is not necessary to run it ?
