Honored ContributorNIOS what am I using?
Hi all,
I'm using Nios II IDE version 9 to download software to hardware. I'm a software engineer not a firmware engineer. I am running the IDE on an old Linux box which was given to me pre-installed. I would like to re-install that software on a new box running Ubuntu. I realise that Ubuntu is not supported. I have seen that there is software available to download and also read that Altera is moving away from IDE towards Eclipse. I'm a bit confused because I thought IDE was Eclipse. How can I tell what software I have installed on my old Linux box? Thanks for your help Ant14 Replies

antonypace, there are two IDEs. The "newer" one is based on NiosII Build Tools which gives the user full control over the build process. You can provide your own Makefile, you can use scripts to generate this or you can use the BSP settings editor. In my Windows installation this IDE is located under:
C:\altera\91\nios2eds\bin\eclipse-nios2.exe Actually (version 9.1 SP1) this IDE has a bug. When you want debug through user libraries source code is not displayed. (SR10752121 , will fixed probably in 10.0) The "old" IDE uses automatic generated Makefiles. All settings are derived from the System Library Properties. I think yes. Under /nios2eds you can look for something like bin/eclipse/nios2-ide.

Ant, I'm sorry but I'm using the Windows version of Quartus. But you can download the setup files from Altera and install Quartus and the NiosII EDS.

I found it rather misleading that they added such a large change in a incremental upgrade (9.0 to 9.1).

Well I'm very disappointed that in the whole Altera forum there is no one who can tell me what I need to download to install the Altera tools.
