Nios II IDE on Vista

Hi,

I have just started using the Nios II IDE on a new Vista system and have not been able to make it work reliably. It dies every few minutes with the message:

JVM terminated. Exit code=1

My system is an almost new Sony Vista laptop with Intel Core2 Duo and 64-bit OS. I have not had any trouble with this machine at all and have been using it with Quartus for about 8 weeks. I have tried all the usual things: reinstalled all of Nios II IDE and Quartus, latest service packs, no other versions installed, environment variables checked, no old Java versions around. Nothing seems to help at all. Is anyone else having trouble? Is there some other way to run the Nios IDE that works better?

Thanks,

John

Sorry, I have not seen this problem. You could try disabling one of the processors just to see if it is some kind of thread contention issue.

I submitted a service request and was told that the Nios II IDE is not supported on 64-bit systems.

Does anybody know if any version of Nios2 IDE or SBT supports 64 bit Windows (XP, Vista, or 7)? I have had all sorts of problems with Nios II crashing and corrupting my workspaces.

    Thanks!

you might try increasing the Java VM from 256 MB to 512 MB in the eclipse.ini (or nios2ide.ini). the flag you want to edit is (from 256m to 512m):

    -Xmx512m

Assuming I "Run As Administrator", I have not had any issues using SBT in Vista x64.

For Nios II IDE, in addition to "Run As Administrator", I had to install an update for Eclipse for it to run stable. I forget the exact menu option, but I just did the update right from the Eclipse GUI. Without the update, it crashed frequently.

It works well in Windows 7 x64 here. I have decent luck with 9.1sp2 and I hear 10.0 is supposedly better. Keep in mind that the Nios II IDE has a short lifespan, as there's a new GUI (SBT for Eclipse) that's intended to replace it.
