Nios II Full license for DE2 Board

Hello, I'm just beginnin to work with the Altera Cyclone and Nios. Is it possible to buy a NIOS II lic for use on this board?

I do not intend to make commercial products, but for my (hobbyist) application (autonomous robots) I cannot live with the Nios time limitation.

Where could I buy such a license and what would be the approx. cost?

Thx, Fried

I have a DE1 board (stripped down DE2). It comes with a .pof file for a NIOS II system that is not time-limited. The Cyclone board I bought earlier did also. However, the catch is that you can not add your own custom SOPC builder components (or modify SOPC configuration at all) because when you re-generate the system, then compile in Quartus II, you will get a time-limited .sof file that will not allow you to make a .pof file.

I have the same issue as you (single individual, not working for company). I don't remember where I found this info, but as I recall after surfing many hours, I came across information that said you can get the NIOS II license for $500. I think the license may only last a year though ??? (I am not sure about that or not.) If so, as long as your design is completed in a year, you can still program your chip(s) with the last .pof file you created when the license was valid.

    Hope this helps.

I do feel price info from Altera is confusing.

According to my request record in 2006, Nios II cpu core price is CDN$465 one time payment no royalty.

http://forum.niosforum.com/work2/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif Yes. Altera licensing and pricing is very confusing.

I now bought a Nios II Dev Kit Cyclone Edition from them (Digikey, ~750€), a license for Nios is included (unlimited) and also a lic for Quartus II (full ed, this for one year only). After one year, no more updates, but the Quartus II software itself should continue to run as is. I don't know if there will be restrictions to the functionality (as in the Web Ed.).

Here in Germany, the Altera distributors didn't even answer my mails concerning licensing alternatives, it seems that Xilinx would have been a better choice?
