Help about DM9000A,communication Ethernet on DE 2

I am trying to communication EThernet with PC by DE2,i researched a sample project in fpga4fun.com,in SOPC builder have a component is DM9000A and NIOS have code to communication with DM9000A,i want to ask what is DM9000A to do?thanks
