Data Format Adapter reset/clear

I am streaming 8 bit data into a 32bit wide FIFO using a Data Format Adapter to package the 4 8bit data words in to 1 32bit data word.

How do I reset or flush the adapter to ensure that is empty. If only one 8bit word is sent then it stays in the adapter until it receives another 3 .
