Pipelining a recursive equation

what is your sample rate relative to clock rate? you can clock the design at multiples of the sample rate to "pipeline" the IIR and even more to "share" the multipliers. if you have Simulink check out DSP Builder Advanced Blockset, it does these sorts of optimizations.
