ModelSim-Intel FPGA Starter Edition 18.1 exits with code 211 when pressing Restart button
Hi matsu,
Thank you for the update.
After comparing both msim_transcript.txt files, the transcript from the affected PC appears normal, since the simulation completes normally up to the intended $stop point.
At this stage, the issue seems more likely to be related to interference from endpoint security software on the affected PC, because:
- The issue is not limited to one project
- The problem also occurs when restart -f is entered manually, so it is not specific to the GUI Restart button only
- ModelSim works normally again after excluding the Intel FPGA / ModelSim directories from Trend Micro real-time scanning
For further investigation, could you please help with the following:
1. Verify whether the Trend Micro Apex One version are the same on both the affected PC and the working PC.
2. If possible, review the Apex One logs around the time the restart failure occurs and check whether any ModelSim-related executable or file activity is being blocked, scanned, quarantined, or monitored.
3. Update Trend Micro Apex One on the affected PC to the latest available version and check whether the issue persists.
Could you please try the above and let me know the results when convenient?
Thank you!

Hi ZiYing,
Thank you for your suggestions.
I checked the requested items and found the following:

Hi matsu.
Thank you for the update. Sorry for the delayed response. I was out of office for a few days last week due to sick.
To help us further narrow down the root cause, could you please assist with the following?
1. Could you please let me know which version of Trend Micro Apex One is currently installed on your system?
2. Does the same exit code 211 issue occur if you use the latest version of ModelSim? Is it possible for you to try on the latest version?
3. Regarding to this behaviour, does it still report exit code 211, or do you see any other error messages?
After launching ModelSim, the Restart button initially works normally. However, after pressing the Restart button two more times, ModelSim unexpectedly terminates. This behavior is new and has never been observed before.
4. Could you please perform a scan following the instructions in the link below and check whether any ModelSim-related executables (for example, vsim.exe, modelsim.exe, or other ModelSim processes) appear in the scan logs?
https://docs.trendmicro.com/en-us/documentation/article/trend-micro-apex-one-service-pack-1-patch-1-online-help-scan-logs
5. If any ModelSim-related entries are found, would it be possible to export the scan logs and share them with us for further analysis?

Hi matsu,
Thank you for the update. I'm glad to hear that you found a workaround.
After ModelSim exits, could you please check Task Manager for any remaining vsim.exe, vish.exe, or modelsim.exe processes? If any of these processes are still running, please end them and then relaunch ModelSim.
If this eliminates the need to reboot the PC and ModelSim works again without a reboot, it would suggest that the reboot is clearing stale simulator processes.
Additionally, would it be possible to share a minimal reproducible test case so that I can try to reproduce the issue on my end?
Thank you.

Just wanted to follow up on my previous message in case it was overlooked.
Have you had a chance to try the suggested steps? Feel free to let me know if you encounter any issues and need any assistance.
Thank you.

Dear ZiYingE_Altera,
Thank you for your follow-up.
I tried the suggested steps, but error code 211 still appears when I restart ModelSim.
However, I found that if I reboot the PC, error code 211 does not occur for the rest of the day, even if I restart ModelSim.
Occasionally, the same error may appear again around the afternoon, but after rebooting the PC once more, the error disappears.
Therefore, the issue has not been completely resolved, but I am currently able to use ModelSim by rebooting the PC as a workaround.
Please let me know if there are any additional checks or settings that I should try to identify the root cause.
Thank you for your support.
Regards,
Matsushima
