The reason for that is most likely that the rise and fall times is much lower in newer families.

MAX3000 and 7000 don't have programmable IO strength, so the slow-slew-rate option is the only available means besides hardware modifications to handle the issue. Output series resistors, better supply bypassing, ferrite filters are possible means.
