Compiling NIOS 3.2 / Quartus 4.2 in Win8

Hello all,

We have a legacy system which still uses the Quartus 4.2 and NIOS 3.2 compiler / SOPC builder to compile the firmware. We have no option to upgrade as we are still using the old APEX FPGA device.

The problem now is, we are able to compile in sopc builder only in Windows XP.

But now we are forced to upgrade to Win7 or Win8 as it is aware that the XP support is going to end soon.

Can anyone have any idea about how to get this compiled in Windows 8. Has anyone had the same contsratint.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Don't bother trying to install old tools in new operating systems. Its not worth your frustration. Install VirtualBox on your Windows 8 machine, and then install Windows XP in VirtualBox followed by Quartus 4.2.

If you are lucky, Windows 8 will allow the USB-Blaster to be captured by the Virtual Machine. Windows 7 would not allow this (at least for my tests). Windows XP and Linux hosts worked ok.

If you store the Virtual Machines on a USB hard-drive, then you can boot the VMs on any machine you like (use the "Machine->Add" menu option in Virtual Box, and then remove it when you are done).

    Cheers,

    Dave

If the blaster can't tunnel through the vm, you should still be able to program bitstreams compiled with older versions of quartus using newer versions of the standalone programmer
