USB ID on Altera USB Blaster

Hi everyone,

In our school/Uni/Lab environment (Windows XP SP3, Altera Suite 9+), we have a mixture of DE0/DE2 board, Terasic USB Blaster and Altera USB Blaster that our students use with Quartus.

When I prepare all the lab machines, I used the DE2 board and installed the driver for USB Blaster. In that way when students connect their DE2/0 board Windows do not get asked to install the driver (as students only have non-administrative right).

We found the Terasic USB Blaster works okay too without user having to load the USB Blaster driver again.

But that does not apply to the Altera (brand) USB Blaster. When students connect up an Altera USB Blaster, Windows will prompt for admin right to install the driver, despite the fact that the same driver software is being used.

We suspect the Altera Blaster has different USB ID(s) hence requires driver installation again. Even 2 of the same Altera Blaster would have different IDs.

Just wondering if there is a way to force the Altera Blasters to have the same USB ID, by way of say programming them please?

Thanks,

Edmond.

The USB ID can be modified with the FTDI MProg utility. You can simply copy the identity from one USB Blaster to another.
