Unbelievably high memory usage

I often get "out of memory" error when compiling in QuartusII 9.1 SP2. It reports the memory usage is 837MB ... :-s Why does Quartus consume so much of memory? is it normal?

What Quartus has to say about it. And the pdf linked (http://www.altera.com/literature/rn/rn_qts_dev_support.pdf) with the release notes has what they recommend memory for different target devices.
