Quartus really slow when switching tabs

Hi,

due to defective hardware on my old rig, I just got a new one and am experiencing odd behaviour with Quartus II. I get a lot of "Please wait while Quartus II is busy" when it starts up and reloads my current work project and also, when I have several windows open that are attached, whenever I switch in between, Q2 becomes unresponsive for 2-3seconds. It even loses the tabbed window bar for a second there. On my old rig I could switch tabs as quickly as in any other app and it ran just fine.

My new machine differs in a couple points from my old one, so maybe anyone has an idea what might cause this behaviour:

Old rig

------

Q6600

2GB RAM

NVidia 8600GS

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

New rig

------

Core i5-750

4GB RAM

ATI Radeon HD 4650

NVidia 8600GS (Radeon has only one DVI, so I added the old rigs card into this system)

Windows 7 Professional x64

One good thing at least: with Windows 7 Pro, the USB Blaster works without disabling driver signing check.

I use Quartus II V9.1sp2 and have two displays (that's why I needed the second gfx card, since none of my displays supports HDMI). The main display is hooked up to the Radeon, the second to the 8600GS. I do not think that this is a gfx issue, since all other apps run fine. It doesn't matter on which display Quartus runs anyways, same behaviour. I do go into length about it, since the setup is rather odd and might give reason to speculate.

Is there any software that I can check if it's up to date, that Q2 depends on?

Q2 looks like the usual MFC nightmare, or is it Java based? (the runtime environment angle)

What version of DirectX (more specifically Direct Draw) does Q2 use?

I hope someone ran into a similar problem and is able to give me a solution. Thanks.

    Update:

the slow tabbing happens only when anything using the JTAG is window-attached, like SignalTap or Programmer. When I unattach the Signaltap windows, I can switch normally in between source code and bsf files again. Weird.

i've never seen that. you might file a service request, though i'm not sure what they'll say about Windows 7 since it isn't listed as supported yet.

    Solution:

Well I think I might have figured it out. My new PC is a Hewlett Packard. Like any other bigger supplier (Dell, Fujitsu, etc.), HP had their own bunch of useless, ressource eating, horribly programmed software installed. Once I got rid off all that, Q2 works fine again.

Could have thought of that earlier. Should be the first thing one does, but I was under pressure to get going again. See what good that did me.

    Ah well coulda, woulda, shoulda...
