Quartus II 10.0 on Windows 7 not synthesising design

Hi!

I'm using Windows 7 and I have been using Quartus II 9.1 for now. I installed Quartus II 10.0 Web Edition (build 218) yesterday. The installer ran without problems, but the resulting installation won't do a thing. I installed support for Cyclone devices only, read about some Stratix-Problem, reinstalled with both of them, but it's still not working: every time I run the compilation I will receive nothing but the message “Info: You have a valid up-to-date license.” This message appears once for each step in the compilation work flow. And each step takes two seconds only, which is way too fast. I tried with both an exisiting v9.1 project and a completely new project in v10 using the new project wizard. The output is the same, nothing but info messages. What's wrong?

Regards

    Hi.

    I am not sure, but..

Did you turn off your antivirus and run the installer as administrator?

    Hi!

There is no anti virus and I started the installer as admin.

    Hi!

I installed again with all default settings. That is I installed Quartus to a different location before. No, it hadn't had spaces in the directory names. Now I just installed everything. It still doesn't work. Apart from that the Quartus II 10.0 does not show up in the “installed software” list in Windows, but the Quartus II 9.1 entry is there. There is no deinstaller registered. Does that mean the installation failed somehow?

    Hi!

This does appear to be an installation issue. There were some issues with the 218 installer, such as anti-virus scanners triggering false negatives and using UNC paths for the destination. The work around for these has been to use the command-line installation method - there are examples on Altera's web site by searching "quartus 10.0 command line install". The 4th item down is "How do I download and install the Altera software version 10.0 for Windows from the command line?". The first link is the FAQ from Altera that points out some of the issues Altera is seeing with this installer and their work arounds - A MUST READ!! I heard from a little fairy that Altera will be pushing out a updated installer this weekend - b220 or revb. This should address some of the issues with the previous installer. I recommend trying this on Monday and reading the updated FAQ on Monday prior to trying to install.

    Hi!

I tried the command line install from my existing temp directory. The installer "altera_installer_cmd.exe" tries to run "..\..\windows_installer/quartus_free/quartus_free_windows_nsis.exe" which fails because of the forward slash in the command. The installer doesn't even care about the error. So I ran the command myself. It actually installed Quartus into the destination. I also installed Cyclone support following instructions from susta in "Re: QuartusII 10.0 installation problem", post 26 (I'm not allowed to post links yet) showpost.php?p=97709&postcount=26. But the result is the same as before: no synthesis. Maybe I'll try again later after reading all of the installation instructions.

I can't get the installer to work at all, it down loads the files (2.6GB in all) and this goes fine; took about 5 hours, and then when it goes through the installation process and completes - the menu entry, and the exe it points to doesn't exist.

But I phoned my altera rep up and he shall be getting an installation disk to me soon; but he did say as this new version doesn't use the standard IDE, and the compiler engine has been re written to be a lot faster.

Sorry I can't be too helpful, but I thought I would share what I was told yesterday.

Other than that I can't seem to use windows 7 & altera - which is annoying.

    Cheers,

    MRb
