Most companies increase the version number index to indicate those minor stuff and to indicate greater changes the (main) version number is increased.

Hi Carl, I didn't come up with this numbering scheme :) However, I looked around and it seems to be fairly common in the EDA business, although some other companies use the full year (eg "2013.2") which might be a bit more clear. My sense though is that there aren't many customers who make the decision based on this and there's probably enough infrastructure in place that assumes the current scheme that it would be a bit annoying to change!
