problem with lcd display

hi, how to use lcd display on de2 board, i want to test vhdl code for lcd controller on de2 board, a already assign all pin according to de2 manual, but when i run the programmer the lcd wont display anything, even when i power on the de2 board, only 7 segment is lights on the lcd is not show any text,according to the manual when i power on the de2 board, the lcd should display welcome to altera's... but its not display anything,tq
