NIOS installer thinks 10.0 is less than 9.1

Unbelievable but the NIOS installer for 9.1 does not know that 10.0 is larger than 9.1.

    Silly wabbit! You can't mix and match versions of tools.

    9.1 Nios II EDS will (likely) not work with 10.0 Quartus II.

    @slacker, the NIOS tool claims to be able to run with latter versions, the problem I present is that the installer does not recognize that 10.0 is larger than 9.1.

    Regardless of what the installer claims or not, it (probably) won't work or, even if it does, you're likely to find all sorts of issues along the way...

    I would install 10.0 Nios II EDS tools with 10.0 QII and 9.1 EDS tools with 9.1 QII. Mixing and matching has never worked, and I haven't seen anything to indicate that it's magically gotten better in recent releases.

    Hi Guys,

    Unfortunately we need to mix 9.1 and 10.0 tools to be able to use NIOS II 10.0.

    Even though the 10.0 programmer programs FPGAs, the connection that it provides through the USB Blaster to NIOS II 10.0 is not functional.

    I had to program with 9.1SP2 programmer and interface with NIOS II 10.0 Eclipse to be able to talk to a Quartus II 10.0-generated SOPC Builder project targeting a Stratix III FPGA.

    I wasn't aware of any issues along those lines. Have you filed a service request?

    In any case, there are options open to you. You could install the 9.1 QII standalone programmer on the machine hooked up via JTAG and enable "remote" programming. Then, on the other (all 10.0) machine, you could connect via ethernet to the "JTAG server" on the 9.1 machine.

    The same could be achieved using VMs (virtualbox or VMWare).

    @slacker: I have not filed a service request but I have the information to do so now.

    I have both NIOS II 10.0 and Programmer 9.1SP2 installed and running on the same machine. The SignalTap and Programmer of 9.1SP2 work well and NIOS II 10.0 can communicate over the USB Blaster set-up by 9.1SP2.

    There are other threads related to the woes of Programming over Quartus II 10.0, hopefully SP1 (if that is what is next) will take care of it.
