This is now happening on 15.1 without update 1. We have found that it is not related to the design you are trying to compile but Quartus instead. I compiled a 2 register design and it still failed with the message Quartus_asm failed unexpectedly. The only way round it is to uninstall Q15.1 and reinstall. It seems to work for a few days then get corrupted and won't compile again.
