time limited sof file and flash programmer

Can I use a time limited sof file with the IDE Flash programmer? Currently I use the Quartus Programmer to get the sof on the board and the run my program from the IDE. I tried to put the sof into the flash but the programming for the sof fails, only the elf file will be programmed to the flash. When I do the same with a standard sof from the example designs the programming succeeds. I also tried the shell and nios2-flash-programmer with the time limited sof file but the command does never return and there is no error message.
