Other Processor Cores

I apologise for the naivete of my question but I've just bought a NIOS II development board with a 2.4" TFT LCD screen.

I understand the NIOS II is a softcore processor does that mean I can replace it say with one of the OpenCores ones?

Thanks

Clive

    Yes.

A primary benefit of using NIOS is that the environment is already setup / integrated, while with OpenCores, you're on your own.

Also I suspect that parts of the nios implementation are optimised for the altera fpgas.

This probably wouldn't be true of any others - so you may not be able to run at as high a frequency.

(Not that I've looked at any OpenCores stuff.)
