NIOSII IDE variable format

Using NIOSII IDE:

Version: 5.1

Build: 112.4

How do I change the default behavior of the IDE in the variable window so that variables display in hex rather than in "natural"? I change the format in the variable window, but it does not "stick". I looked around, but it does not appear to be obvious to me.

    Try

    Windows->Preferences...->C/C++->Debug->Default Variable Format etc

    I wonder if some of the hover or other behaviors that cause the editor to become inexplicably unresponsive can be turned off?
