How to profile a custom program?

I am new in Nios II shell command.

I have read the Use the GNU Profiler to Measure Code Performance tutorial but I can't figure out what does the "create-this-app" or the "parameter_definition.tcl " stand for in my custom project!?

Any single piece of advise will be appreciated.
