you may also try nfs root. (but i didn't test that yet)
or, the hardware approach, check if you can replace the sdram chip to 32mb, (ie 16mx16).
it has the same pins out, but address a12. you can check if there is a pcb trace reserved for a12. or you can find some spare pin out of 2c35.
