Has anyone here used a winbond w25x80 flash chip in place of the altera epcs chips? Just wondering about compatibility.

Altera_ForumAs a possible problem, Quartus isn't supporting 8MBit EPCS chips and their respective chip IDs.You may want to use 4 or 16 MBit second source instead.

Haven't used a winbond chip. However, the EPCS devices are actually serial NOR flash purchased from Numonyx (previously STMicro):
