I use all possible combinations;
- Windows XP - Windows 7 - Linux (Centos 6.4) - Quartus Subscription Edition - Quartus Web Edition - Modelsim Altera Starter Edition - Modelsim-SE (direct from Mentor) I install the latest versions of tools (or one version behind latest) on my development machine (dual boot Windows + Linux), and have the other versions installed in VirtualBox Virtual machines. I only install one tool per VM so that I can be sure there is no problems with tool versions affecting each other. From a Linux or Windows XP host, the VM can acquire the USB-Blaster from the host, and all the JTAG-based tools work fine. I'd consider them all to be "fairly" stable. I can make Quartus crash, but usually its when I have combinations of SignalTap II, the programmer, and system console running simultaneously. The tools play a lot nicer together since about 12.1sp1. Making this a sticky since I'm curious what the results will be. If I can make a suggestion, if you are able to edit your poll I would break out Vista, 7, Ubuntu, CentOS, Redhat, etc... to separate voting options.

Dave,
Thanks for your thoughtfulness. BadOmen, How I can edit the poll? Please, feel free to edit if you wish. Thanks - Altera_Forum

In my view there was a pencil beside the poll that I clicked on to edit it (not sure if that is visible to others). I lumped XP and Vista together and broke out a few Linux distros.

One of our big-name customers swears by windows for their build machine. Something about quartus being windows native. We use linux

I heard they redesigned the gui with Qt since 12.0, and since Qt is portable across platforms it should much stable compared to before 12 release. I use Windows 7 and seems pretty stable except for some stability issues related to while running signaltap/nios debug. I was not able to use on my linux machine since I have a USB dongle (sentinel) for my subscription key and never got the drivers to work with my Ubuntu. So I would say windows for a better experience.
Here I am only talking about the usex of the tool in windows, not performance. - Altera_Forum

Linux Centos everyday for command line builds, and also more recently we've switched to Linux for GUI/interactive use, e.g. signal tap, QSYS etc.

Linux Ubuntu (unsupported OS version, but works). Only issues if you have an old USB T-Guard for your license. (No longer officially supported in either version but not supported at all in the Linux world).
Like Linux because it has less OS overhead, and you can control it easily. It's also easier to deal with multiple tool versions in Linux -vs- windows. I currently have four versions if Quartus installed with Modelsim ASE along side Modelsim DE and Aldec Riverera Pro with no issues using a "module load" to load up what ever version I need. This is a must for me, working with multiple customers with different tool environments. Pete
