How to make my first dollar as an FPGA engineer?

Hello Altera Community

I am looking to better understand how the FPGA business works. 💵

Are there any websites, like in the wardogs movie, where people post projects to complete?

or do I have to join a company to work on one of these big solutions with multiple types of engineers?

I have send a project idea to the Altera contact form.

Thanks in advance 🐳

Great question — the FPGA industry has a few different paths, and the partner ecosystem around Altera is a good illustration of how it actually works in practice.

The Partner / Design Services Route

Rather than a "Wardogs"-style open bidding site, the most common model is engaging with specialized design service companies. Altera maintains a network of certified design partners that take on custom projects end-to-end. For example:

    • iWave provides comprehensive FPGA hardware, firmware, and system development services for high-performance applications requiring ultra-low latency, high bandwidth, and real-time processing, designing custom FPGA platforms tailored to specific performance, I/O, thermal, and mechanical requirements. FPGA Design Service
    • Serrano Systems specializes in FPGA board-level design centered around Altera FPGAs, covering the full board development lifecycle — from schematic design and constraint-driven PCB layout to signal integrity analysis and system validation — across Cyclone, Arria, and Stratix families including SoC variants. FPGA Board Level Design Services
    • Dexcel provides end-to-end expertise spanning FPGA architecture, RTL design, high-speed hardware development, verification, and system integration, built on Altera FPGA and SoC FPGA technologies. DeXcel Electronics Designs Pvt Ltd
    • ELSYS Design is a leading engineering company specializing in SoC/ASIC/FPGA, electronic boards, embedded software, and systems engineering, delivering tailored R&D solutions through a network of engineering sites across Europe. ELSYS Design

    The Altera Partner Program

The Altera Solution Acceleration Partner Program fosters industry innovation through collaboration across the FPGA ecosystem, drives technical excellence by giving access to Altera's advanced technical resources and expert support, and amplifies FPGA market impact through joint initiatives. Altera Launches New Partner Program to Accelerate FPGA Solutions Development If your project idea is compelling, engaging with partners in this program is a realistic path to getting it built.

Do you need to join a company?

Not necessarily, but FPGA projects almost always involve multiple disciplines — RTL/firmware, hardware board design, embedded software, verification, signal integrity — so solo freelance work on a complex system is rare. The more common paths are:

    • Hire a design services firm (like those above) to execute your project concept.
    • Join one of these firms as an engineer if you want to work on varied FPGA projects across many domains.
    • Engage the partner ecosystem — for example, rsyocto offers tailored and independent FPGA design services for Altera FPGAs FPGA Design Services , which is more of a boutique engagement model.

Sending your idea to Altera's contact form was a reasonable first step. Following up by browsing the Altera partner directory and reaching out directly to one of these design service companies would be the logical next move — they are set up to scope, quote, and execute exactly this kind of project.
