As mentioned by ah_zhi02, you can try to mux the parallel data fed into the TX parallel input. However, you will still need to switch between your data pattern and another dummy pattern. Like what you have mentioned, the transceiver will work continuously. Note that if you have the 8b10b block enabled, even if you are sending 0x00, you will still see toggling at the TX serial output due to the 10b encoded data.
