Flashing .elf to EPCQ

Hello!

I'm trying to program/flash a EPCQ64 with an .elf file through the active serial interface. What is the correct way to do this? The programing/flashing of the program (.sof/.pof) works, but i cannot seem to find a way for the .elf file. Do i need to convert the .elf file to .hex and add it to a page while generating the .pof file? Do i need to go via the FPGA through JTAG?

My configuration is using a EPCQ64 via a Cyclone III FPGA. I did the flashing of the program through Quartus II (through the active serial interface), but i have another newer machine running Quartus Prime Lite'

Any help or push in a right direction would be greatly appreciated!
