Development kit powers off, won't power up again

Hello,

I have a Stratix 10 GX development kit purchased from Mouser a few weeks ago. It's been working well and I have been pleased with the kit.

Today, I had it sitting on my bench, connected to my development laptop. I had run the board test program previously and the system seemed to be in normal operating condition.

After about 30 minutes of the board being up and running, it powered off. The board felt warm but not hot. I assumed it had just hit some kind of internal temperature limit and powered off.

I left the board to cool for 30 minutes. It was then definitely cool. When I slid the switch (SW7) to power it on, as I normally do, the blue LED (D45) illuminates, but nothing else seems to happen. No other LEDs illuminate and the fans do not start running as they normally do.

I tried unplugging the power supply and leaving the device for another hour, yet the behavior is unchanged.

The board is in factory-default switch settings and has not been reprogrammed at all. As far as I know, it's still in as-delivered condition.

Are there any debugging or reset actions I can take, or should I contact Mouser to request an RMA? This appears to be an early-life failure, as far as I can tell.

    The board has not failed in the same way since it failed the first time.

    You can go ahead and close the case. I have a paper trail of this problem to

    fall back on if it happens again.

    I had 6 of these boards have almost a similar problem! They would shut down in this manner after a random period of time. However, in my case, flipping the switch off and on brought them back, but then after more random time, they would shut off again. They were in open air just like you have it so it did not seem like a thermal issue. I have a number of additional boards that don't have this problem at all.

    I just RMA'ed the bad ones. It was impossible to reproduce reliably to diagnose since I had no idea how long it would be before a board would shut down.

      Thank you for taking the time to comment. Genuinely appreciated.

      Believe it or not, my board came back to life yesterday. I have no idea why. I had completely disconnected it and was looking into sending it back to Mouser for service. On a whim, I thought I'd try one more time (it had been a couple of hours) and, oddly, it powered up.

      I will work more with the board today and see how it goes. Now I notice that I'm concerned about leaving the board running for very long, as it's the only one I have and I'm trying to complete a project with it before the end of the month.

      It would be good to know, from Intel, what the data is on boards failing in the field and having to be returned for repair. When I talk with Mouser, I'll see if I can get any data from their customer support.

    Could you help check and try program with your own Quartus design? This is to verify whether the dev kit board is still functional or not. Provide screenshot of your tasting.

      Hi Fakhrul -

      I was able to program the board this morning with the PCIe design from the

      Board Test Kit examples for the board. I have not tested it in a PC system yet.

      I heard from Mouser the procedure for returning the board via RMA. I am going

      to work with it for another couple of weeks. If I have more problems like the one

      I reported above, I'll contact Intel to have an engineer evaluate the case to see if

      an RMA is appropriate. That is part of the procedure communicated to me by

      Mouser.
