Does the Intel® Stratix® 10 FPGA firmware apply optimized on-chip voltage regulator trim settings in designs using the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition software versions 18.0 update 1 and later?

Description

Intel® Programmable Solutions Group (PSG) has determined that Intel® Stratix® 10 FPGA firmware is not applying optimized on-chip voltage regulator trim settings and therefore may cause a slight timing model mis-correlation.

Resolution

The optimized settings are available through an updated Intel® Stratix® 10 FPGA firmware with optimized on-chip voltage regulator trim settings that restore the timing model correlation. Intel® Programmable Solutions Group requires that customers apply the updated firmware to future Intel® Stratix® 10 devices (see table below).

This firmware update:

  • Does not require recompilation or change design timing.
  • Has no impact on design functionality or performance.
  • Has no impact on power specifications as power models in EPE are already based on optimized regulator trim settings.
  • Has no impact to form, fit, or function.

Refer to the following table to determine the appropriate actions for a firmware update:

Customer Design StatusCustomer Deployment TimeframeRecommended Actions
Intel® Stratix® 10 designs in productionFor devices deployed before the end of Q2’19
  • Bitstream regeneration is optional.
  • No adverse impact from regenerating the bitstream if you want a single POF.
  • Optionally download the patch to regenerate the bitstream.
For devices deployed after the end of Q2’19
  • Bitstream regeneration is required.
  • Firmware update applies optimized on-chip voltage regulator trim settings that improve timing correlation, to accommodate future natural manufacturing variations.
  • Download the patch to regenerate the bitstream or migrate to the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software version newer than 18.1.2 (includes updated firmware) by end-Q2’19.

Steps to regenerate bitstream

1.   For the full Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software, download and install the patch for the relevant Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software version.

2.  If you use standalone Intel® Quartus® Prime Programmer Pro Edition, also download and install the patch for the relevant Intel® Quartus® Prime Programmer Pro Edition version.

3.   JTAG users

  • Use the existing .sof.
  • Use programmer from the full Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software installed with a patch OR standalone programmer installed with a patch to program the FPGA.

4.  Non-JTAG users—Use the Programming File Generator tool from full Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software OR Standalone Programmer installed with the relevant patch to convert your existing .sof to the new .pof/.rbf/.jic/.rpd.

5. The patch will also take effect on the auto programming file generation feature available in the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software during design compilation.

Patches

For the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software released prior to version 18.0.1 final models are not available, you must recompile with the newer version of the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software.

Download and install the following patch for the full Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software:

Download and install the following patch for the standalone Intel® Quartus® Prime Programmer Pro Edition:

The updated Intel® Stratix® 10 FPGA firmware is scheduled to be included in a future release of the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software.
