Didn't quite follow, but are you saying having a hanging output bus with data[7..0] on it, then a hanging input bus somewhere else with data[3..0] on it doesn't work? I could have sworn I'd used this before. (I use connection by name all the time, although admit it has drawbacks in trying to find what things connect to). If you're saying you connect an 8 bit bus to a 4-bit input and expect it to rip off the lower bits is probably correct that it doesn't work.
