Quartus II V10.1 Bull5hit.. Why?

Hi to all,

we have been using the Quartus II Software for over years. Mainly we use the schmematic entry and our designs grow and grow...

But now, in QII V10.1, the schematic entry is the greatest bull5hit Altera has ever done. Why is that so? Is there a Xilinx Engineer in

the Altera QII-Team to sabotage this software?

Some examples:

1. Copy-Paste wires with names in BDF-Editor.

If you press CTRL-C on a marked wire, the signal name is cleared... you must then press ESC followed by a new CTRL-C

to copy the signal.

2. The Symbol files are totally different from the older ones, if they exists...

If you update a symbol file, created with QII-9.2 or earlier, the symbol is so different that you can completely redesign your schematic.

On heavy projects there is no place, so its really hard work.

3. Copy-Paste from instances is totally disordered.

If you copy an instance, normaly the copy has a new, unique instance name. In Q10.1 some times Quartus don't increase the instance number.

So you get two or more blocks with the same name... That ends in compile failure and total chaos...

4. Auto Portnumber increase.

If you add a Port, QII in earlier versions has automatically increased an index after the name. In V10.1 not...

5. tbc....

Has none here the same problems? We have to use this version because we want to use the Cyclone IV GX chips.....

But we decide to test Xilinx. Is that the way Altera wants to go?

I hope this thread will not be censored :-)

Marco

    --- Quote Start ---

All versions of Quartus are covered by the same licence. You dont need to buy a new licence for Q10.

    --- Quote End ---

If you don't renew the subscription license and if it went out before the release date of Quartus 10, then you can't use the subscription edition of Quartus 10. If you want support from Altera, you have to renew the license every year.

They actually have a fix for that!!! I found it once.

    I can't post links yet.

So just search for 10.1 sp1 patch 1.05

Thats will fix the BDF errors. works like a charm

I'm going to have to join this bandwagon. I just started using Quartus 10.1sp1 "upgrading" from 9.1sp2. When I go to print my top level schematic, there is no way I can specify how many pages I want the schematic to span! I got into a mode where the design is split up into 4 pages but I do not even know how I got there.

Also, when printing, ALL headers and footers that were present in 9.1sp2 are completely gone. Has anyone else run into this issue?

A few of my co-workers and I are considering going back down to 9.1sp2 until the bugs are ironed out. I'm not paying a licensing fee to be an unpaid beta tester.

I just installed 10.1 and am finding it infuriating, for many of the reasons cited above. It seems each task is more cumbersome that it used to be. Why? Why? Why?
