Quartus II 11.1 Installation Hangs

I've tried running the online installer.

I've tried downloading the DVDs and then mounting them as files.

I've downloaded the separate exe files and running them.

As soon as I accept the terms and conditions and click next, the installer never responds, and just sits there forever. I have let it run for about an hour and a half.

It's a brand new machine that just has Windows XP SP3 installed.

I have the firewall turned off.

I have turned MS Security Essentials off.

It's a dual core AMD.

About the only thing out of the ordinary is that this machine came with a card reader that shows up like a bunch of floppy drives, making the hard drive show up as I:\.

Help !!

Bob, I was going to suggest disabling the card reader in the device manager then re-booting to get the hard drive back to 'C:'. I have

realised that all installation paths would be incorrect when the card reader is re-enabled.

Can you re-assign the drive letters in the 'Computer Management' window

(on XP Start -> Right Click My Computer -> Manage)?

    Nial.

I'm pretty sure that re-assigning the hard drive would require a complete re-install of windows. Also, the BIOs on this machine does not have an option to disable the card reader. I would have to turn the USB off altogether.

I'm really hoping that this late generation of the Altera installer is not so poorly written as to not use the environment variables that describe the system.

I ran TCPview while doing an install, and verified that there are no network connections being attempted by the installer. Ever. The thread that is blocking in the installer is running a function called something like InstVerifyDriver.

    Altera ... ?

i regularly install Altera tools to the D drive, but my C drive is the primary boot device

can you try the command line installer? it might provide more debug information. instructions are somewhere on altera.com

    The command line installer worked.

I had to extract the devices file first to an installer dir, then overwrite that data with the programs to get it to run.

I'm guessing that I will have to overwrite the dir once again to install the devices.

FYI -- The --net options fails to contact some URL at sw-depot.altera.com.

As far as I can tell, that never has existed.
