Quartus 9.1 lockup on Linux RHEL 5.2

Anybody else seeing the Quartus 9.1 GUI completely locking up on Linux? I am running it on Centos 5.2 x86_64 (RHEL 5.2) with standard Gnome through VNC.

This has happened to me several times since I loaded 9.1 last week. It always occurs when the cursor is hovering over a signal in a message window, causing the complete signal path to pop-up. The pop-up is blank, and Quartus is completely locked up. Very annoying... Is there a way to disable the pop-ups??

    Hi,

I had such kind of problems on an other linux distro. Altera support told me to try a new quartus GUI based on Qt framework like TimeQuest GUI. It's in beta with Q9.1. For me this new GUI works and is faster than the original one.

Use "qgui" command instead of "quartus".

Thanks for the tip, but I think have found a solution.

I upgraded my TightVNC Windows XP client from version "1.3.9"

to version "1.3 10". So far so good after a couple hours of trying

to get it to fail. The signal pop-ups are still blank for the very

long pathnames, but it doesn't seem to lock up the GUI anymore.

...unfortunately this does not fix the lockup issue all of the time :-(

    I have tried "qgui", but it looks to have even more severe problems;

i.e. you can't add nodes to SignalTaps without the "add nodes" GUI

    disappearing.

I just found out from Altera that this is a bug that only shows up on Centos 5 using Gnome. SP1 will have a fix.

In the meantime, I have found no lockup problems using KDE.

There are a couple of issues that are going on with the Linux interface and Quartus II 9.1:

    1. Using Linux and KDE, you can not resize the Quartus window. There is a patch available from Altera - I believe path 0.16, being fixed for 9.1 SP1 in Feb.

    2. Using Linux and GNOME, the GUI appears to lock up. There is a patch for this as well, patch 0.46, also being fixed in 9.1 SP1.

Altera does have the qgui solution available now as a beta, but it sounds like there may be some issues with this. This is based on the Qt framework, as EME identified. Altera will be going to the Qt framework soon - targetting 10.0. This is a more robust windowing solution than the MainWin solution. Also, they have some experience with this, as TimeQuest is already based on this framework.
