NIOS EDS Vista installation troubles

I'm running Vista Ultimate on an x64 system, and have had no problems installing and running both Quartus 8.1 and ModelSim 6.3. I'm just getting in to NIOS development, and when trying to install I received the following error:

--- Quote Start ---

You need an installation of Quartus II / SOPC Builder 8.1 or later to install this kit (you have no Quartus).

--- Quote End ---

I had 8.0sp1 installed, but I removed it when installing 8.1. I tried setting the QUARTUS_ROOTDIR environment variable with no success, and the same three binaries (Quartus / ModelSim / NIOS) installed just fine on a nearby XP system.

I've read of Vista incompatibilities with 7.2, but my Google-fu has failed me and I can't find any documented workarounds for 8.1. And ideas?

    I know this doesn't help you much, but I was able to install NIOS II EDS 8.1 with no issues on Vista x64 without having to do anything special.

    Are you sure you have version 8.1 of NIOS and not an older version?

    Definitely all the latest versions, again all install just fine on i386 XP systems.
