I suppose it depends what part you are compiling for, but when using the bigger parts you will need at least 3 gigs of RAM for the compile. In a 32-bit windows you are limited to 2 gigs of RAM for an application. There is a work around to increase this to 3. However, it should be noted that this could cause issues for your computer as far as things working correctly. If you are still interested in it doing it on a 32-bit machine I would google how to increase program RAM limit to 3 GB on windows 32-bit and then the version of the os you are using whether it be xp/vista/win7.

When compiling for the Altera Cyclone V SoC kit, which uses the largest cyclone V part, I had to increase my memory to 3GB in order for it to compile. I haven't tried it on any other cyclone V or arria V.
